Ford has been leaning heavily on over-the-air updates this year—sometimes a bit too often for recall fixes, much to the frustration of both the company and its customers. But today’s news is a welcome change. Ford is rolling out a new update for F-150 owners that promises to noticeably improve the BlueCruise hands-free driving system. Depending on the version currently installed, the update could even bring a few brand-new features to the table.

Your Older F-150 Will Be As Up-To-Date As What’s Hitting Dealer Lots

Ford is now rolling out BlueCruise 1.4 to several model years of the F-150. This update will be available for 2022 and 2023 gas-powered F-150s, as well as 2022 to 2024 F-150 Lightnings. Until now, these trucks were running either BlueCruise 1.0 or 1.2, the earliest versions of the hands-free driving system.

For owners still on BlueCruise 1.0, the most noticeable improvement will be the ability to initiate hands-free lane changes simply by activating a turn signal—a feature that was introduced in 1.2.

For all F-150 owners, Ford says the updated BlueCruise 1.4 system should feel more refined overall. Drivers can expect more stable lane positioning, smarter speed adjustments on tighter highway curves, and fewer system disengagements in light rain or when sunlight hits the sensors directly.

BlueCruise 1.4 is also already available on 2025 models of the F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator at dealerships. Ford added, “We will announce software updates for other model years across F-150 vehicles as they become available,” hinting that additional updates may be coming. So even if your truck isn’t included just yet, there’s a good chance it will be soon.

We’re assuming the update will be free and should roll out very soon. We’ve reached out to Ford to confirm this, but haven’t received a response at the time of publishing. We’ll update this section as soon as we hear back.

It’s Still Not The Most Advanced BlueCruise

BlueCruise 1.4 is one of Ford’s latest hands-free driving systems—but there’s an even newer version. BlueCruise 1.5, announced late last year, adds a major new feature: automated lane changes. On 1.4 and earlier, the vehicle would only change lanes when you signaled. With 1.5, the system can decide on its own when it’s safe to move around a slower car on the highway. This brings it closer to certain versions of GM’s Super Cruise system.

Right now, BlueCruise 1.5 is only available on new Ford Mustang Mach-Es. Part of the reason is that 2025 and newer Mach-E models have updated hardware—new sensors and a faster processor—that older vehicles don’t have. Since you can’t upgrade a car’s hardware via software, this likely explains why the system hasn’t rolled out beyond the latest Mach-E. It raises the question of whether BlueCruise 1.4 will be the final version most older Fords ever receive.

That said, all technology eventually reaches a point where it can’t be updated further—think of older navigation systems, for example. If having the latest hands-free driving features is important to you, it’s something to keep in mind when shopping for a new Ford or considering an upcoming purchase.
