These days, plenty of EVs come with solid driving range, but charging speed is still something carmakers are working hard to improve. One of the main ways to make charging faster is by using higher-voltage systems. Brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis were some of the first to roll out 800-volt setups, which allow their cars to take full advantage of ultra-fast 350-kW DC chargers.

Volvo is now joining that group. Just a year after releasing its large electric SUV, the EX90, the company has upgraded it from a 400-volt system to a more advanced 800-volt one. Along with that, Volvo has introduced several other appealing updates—and here’s the good news: some of these features can even be added to the 2025 models you may already own.

It’s The Second Volvo To Get The System

Volvo first introduced its new 800-volt electrical system on the ES90 fastback crossover back in March, and now the EX90 becomes the second model to feature it. For the U.S. market, though, the EX90 will actually be the first to arrive, since Volvo hasn’t confirmed whether the ES90 will be sold here.

The company hasn’t shared all the details about the EX90’s charging improvements just yet, but it did mention that the SUV can gain up to 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes. What Volvo didn’t clarify is whether that figure is based on WLTP or EPA testing standards.

When the ES90 was unveiled, Volvo noted that the new battery setup could reach 80% charge roughly 10 minutes faster than the 400-volt version of the EX90, so that gives us a good idea of what to expect. We’ve reached out to Volvo for more specifics and will update once more information is available.

The New Computer And Safety Features Aren’t Just For The New Car

Along with the new electrical system, Volvo has also equipped the EX90 with a more advanced main computer, supplied by Nvidia. This upgraded unit is more powerful than the one in the 2025 model, and it unlocks a few extra safety features.

For example, the emergency steering system now works just as well at night as it does during the day. The EX90 can also receive updates with information about potential road hazards. And if the system senses that the driver is no longer paying attention, the SUV can safely bring itself to a stop and automatically place an emergency call.

While Volvo can’t retrofit the EX90’s electrical system, the computer is a different story. The company has confirmed that 2025 EX90 models will receive the new computer upgrade—and the best part is, it’s free.

That’s a pretty big deal, since automakers rarely make hardware upgrades to cars that are already on the road unless it’s part of a recall. Offering it at no cost makes it even more surprising. So, if you already own a 2025 EX90, you’ll still benefit from the improved computer, along with all the new safety features and performance enhancements that come with it.

Volvo has also added another neat feature to the EX90, this time borrowed from the ES90. The SUV now comes with an electrochromic panoramic sunroof. With just the push of a button, the glass can shift from clear to opaque—so you get instant shade without relying on a bulky fabric cover.
