Few vehicles capture the modern car market quite like the Mercedes G-Wagen. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the G-Class was just a rugged workhorse, not something Mercedes ever imagined exporting to the U.S. Today, it’s arguably one of the brand’s halo vehicles—though some might argue the Maybachs hold that title. The G-Class now starts at $148,500, nearly $30,000 more than an S-Class sedan, and many buyers end up paying well above that.

Given how much money the G-Class generates for Mercedes, it’s no surprise that other automakers want a piece of the action. One notable contender stepping up is Genesis.

During Hyundai’s 2025 CEO Investor Day, CEO José Muñoz shared the brand’s upcoming product plans. He confirmed that Hyundai will be expanding its lineup with more N performance models and a new pickup truck.

Muñoz also revealed exciting news for Genesis: the luxury brand will be launching new flagship vehicles, including a bold off-roader. “We will go beyond the brand’s existing lineup to create new flagship vehicles. For example, an off-roader infused with the spirit of adventure, just like the X Gran Equator concept,” he said. “These vehicles, currently still concepts, show our goal to deliver leading products that provide exceptional experiences.”

Genesis hasn’t shared many specifics about its upcoming off-roader yet. The brand did preview a luxurious off-roader with the X Gran Equator concept, which made its debut in April. That said, the way Genesis talks about it suggests the production model won’t be a direct copy of the concept.

Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’s chief creative officer, described the X Gran Equator as combining “elegance with ruggedness, and the spirit of exploration with refined comfort.” It’s likely that this same philosophy—blending luxury and adventure—will carry over to the production version.

Will Genesis’s New SUV Be Body-On-Frame or Unibody?

We don’t yet know what platform the new Genesis SUV will use. However, Hyundai is working on a new body-on-frame midsize truck platform, which could also serve as the basis for an SUV. It would make sense for Hyundai to get as much use out of this platform as possible to justify the development costs. That makes it likely that a rugged, body-on-frame Genesis SUV could be built on the same foundation.

What Engine Will Genesis’s New Off-Roader Get?

Genesis hasn’t revealed what kind of powertrain its new off-road flagship SUV will use. That said, the brand has plenty of options to consider. So far, Genesis has focused on gasoline-powered cars and fully electric vehicles, but hybrids and extended-range EVs are coming soon.

Since this SUV is still at the concept stage, Genesis has a few years to see how the market evolves and how technology develops before locking in a powertrain. We expect the SUV’s platform will be flexible enough to handle multiple options, giving the brand room to choose the best fit.

Are Any Other Brands Besides Mercedes Working On A G-Wagen Rival?

BMW is reportedly working on a new range-topping, off-road-oriented SUV that will be built in South Carolina. However, this model might lean more toward BMW’s “ultimate driving machine” philosophy than being a true rock-crawling rival to the G-Wagen, even if it targets a similar customer base.

Audi hasn’t officially confirmed any off-road SUV plans yet. That said, the brand did show off the wild Q6 e-tron off-roader concept with portal axles last winter, hinting that its PPE platform could handle a serious off-road vehicle in the future.
